That's the base mod that can work on any version of doom but the Hell on Earth Starter pack is 35 levels (32 main and 3 secret levels) that were made to by the creator of brutal doom that were made to be a sort of remake of doom 1 built with brutal doom in mind. i think there's this misconception that brutal doom is just a gore mod but that couldn't be further from the truth as brutal doom and classic doom are jsut 2 completely seperate game
and i really want to emphasis this because classic doom can feel really slow and enemies can feel crazy bullet spongey by today's standards and you pump bullet after bullet on the stronger enemies and by increasing damage all around you've dramatically sped up the flow of combat to the degree and made something that feels snappier sharper and more importantly modern. Okay so Brutal Doom is a gameplay mod for classsic doom and that aims to modernise it using a lot of features of modern source ports to add things like extra gore jumping, crouching reloading, dual weilding, secondary fire, new enemy attacks and the i think the most important thing is that it doubles the damage you deal and take. and while i really enjoy it with the base games playing it with the hell on earth level pack completely transforms this to a game i would say is timeless and could still be good in another 20 years. when i was recalling all this to a friend who's a hardcore doom fan he turned me towards Brutal Doom and it completely changed my mind on classic doom. i completely understand why they were great from their time but for a first time player in 2020 it can be a little slow and simple. I just wanna say i was completely blown away, been meaning try classic doom ever since i played doom 2016 so i got doom 3 bfg edition on sale a few weeks ago after seeing it came with classic doom1 and 2 and to my dissapointment i was pretty underwhelmed.
So i want to start of by saying this uses "FreeDoom" as base so you won't need to own a copy of doom 2 to play this and you can actually download and play this completely free HERE
TL:DR tried classic doom, found it didn’t hold up, tried brutal doom with its custom level pack and it’s probably the best shooter I’ll play all 2021.
